WELCOME ABOARD - Newest Member

Hugh McFarlane
Welcome Aboard to Hugh McFarlane and his wife Catherine. Hugh was a cannon cocker sergeant with the 11th Marines from Feb 1989 to May 2009 and is currently employed as a Corrections Officer with the State of California. Hugh was recruited by Vince Mast when they met at a Marine Corps Ball sponsored by a Marine veterans’ organization.

7th REGIMENT FAMILIES

A working party composed of Chapter members Vince Mast, Dave Dangwillo,
Bob Shepard, Charlie Garbarini, Jim Irwin, Dorothee Irwin, Quint Villanueva and
Matt Zack delivered 180 boxes of turkey dinners to 7th Regiment families at 29 Palms Marine Base on Friday Dec 21 in time for Christmas.
Each box contained eight to ten fully prepared, complete turkey dinners.
Do the math, that’s at least 1440 meals. Good work, folks!

Pictured to the left, Jensen’s CEO, Matt Zack, preparing to off load turkey dinners for 7th Marines. Matt drove the delivery truck from Palm Desert to base. He participated in every Christmas dinner delivery since the beginning of the program more than five years ago.

Owing to generous donations from shoppers at Jensen’s Palm Springs and Palm Desert markets and the support of Jensen’s top management and staff our Chapter received enough in donations to increase the number of meals we provided to 7th Regiment families this year over last year.

Jensen’s once again allowed our Chapter to set up donation tables at the entrance to the Palm Desert and Palm Springs stores which were staffed by a handful of Chapter members for eight weekends. Special kudos to members who volunteered to work multiple shifts to get the job done, especially to Jim Irwin and Jim Olson who worked multiple shifts solo.

Of course, without support of the Regimental command staff our program would never get off the ground. Hats (covers) off to to Gisela Lemon, Regimental Family Resource Officer for a job well done organizing and coordinating delivery of the meals to recipient families.

Bravo Zulu to honorary Chapter member Matt Zack, CEO of Jensen’s Fine Foods, who drove the delivery truck from Palm Desert to the Marine base, with Board member Bob Shepard riding shotgun.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

Desert Cities, Mitchell Paige Medal of Honor Chapter marines and sailors convened for their final meeting of tin 2018 on December 20 with a hearty Ho Ho Ho from Santa Clause who led jolly crew and their spouses in singing a host of Christmas holiday songs as he distributed candy favors to the spouses.
Welcomed aboard was new member Hugh McFarlane and his wife Catherine.

President Vince Mast presented a recap of activities in which our Chapter was engaged in 2018. The list of organizations supported by our Chapter includes the 7th Marine Regiment and its families, the Armed Services YMCA at MCAGCC, Marne Corps JR ROTC at Desert Hot Springs High School, The Marine Corps League, the Staff NCO School at Camp Pendleton, the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Cart Parade, and the City of Palm Desert Veterans’ Day Ceremony.

Our Chapter is fully engaged in community and Marine Corps activities that provide plenty of opportunities for Chapter members to be actively involved.

So make it one of your 2019 New Year’s resolution to become an active participant in Chapter activities.

DID YOU KNOW...

Did you know…

Marines landed at Guantanamo Bay Cuba in 1741? No, not the Continental Marines of the Revolutionary War days.

These Marines were led by Colonel William Gooch, Royal Lieutenant Governor of colonial Virginia. These colonial Marines were securing a forward base in Cuba for the British fleet.

Four decades later these same colonial Marines would fight yet again but this time against the British mighty fleet in the American Revolution fight. They saw action in the Caribbean, at Trenton, at Princeton on Manhattan Island and New York City. down the Mississippi River to New Orleans and on Lake Champlain and even on mother country England’s own soil. And…these Continental Marines preceded the Declaration of Independence.
…more later.

UP NEXT: TUN TAVERN CLUB MEETINGS

CURRENT TUN TAVERN MEMBERS

TUN TAVERN GROUP MEETING
The Tun Tavern Club meets several times a year for dinner, fellowship, camaraderie, to swap sea stories and to pig out on food and grog. The few shekels accumulated by the club, if any, are turned over to the Chapter to use at its discretion. There are no club officers or rules or regulations guiding the demeanor of members and guests other than military courtesy extended to each other.
From time to time members may be tasked with sharing their military experiences with the members. Tun Tavern meetings are open to guests both military and civilian.
The next meeting of the Tun Tavern Club is January 9, 1730 at the Firehouse Grill, Palm Desert.
