RECRUITMENT DRIVE SET TO LAUNCH
Thanks to the tremendous support from Jensen’s Market’s CEO Matt Zack our Chapter is preparing to launch a professional public relations program designed to build community support and attract new members.
The advertising firm for Jensen’s Markets has been working with members of our Board for several weeks designing a program for use by several media outlets in the Coachella Valley.
Don’t be surprised to see Harry Covert or Vince Mast on local television talking up all good work our Chapter has done over the years in support of Marine families, young men and women involved in Jr ROTC, Devil Pups and the Armed Service YMCA at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center 29 Palms.
Hopefully, the initiative will inspire each member to make a max effort to recruit at least one new member to join the Chapter.

Some Folks STILL haven’t been heard from
…you know who you are. Get hot!
No shortage of excellent books have been written about the Korean War. Now comes another great read about the Marines at the Chosin Reservoir authored by Hampton Sides.
On Desperate Ground is about the Korean war’s greatest battle i.e. the 1st Marine Division fighting its way from the Chosin Reservoir to the security of the twin cities Hamhung/Hungnam. The book chronicles the extraordinary acts of heroism and leadership called on by every Marine to do the impossible to escape certain annihilation of the 1st Marine Division by an overwhelming Chinese force.
A must read for every Marine.
DID YOU KNOW...
In November 1950 Mao Zetung, titular head of Communist China ordered Dehuai Peng, Commander of the Chinese armies to send one of their best armies, the Ninth Army Group against the 1st Marine Division. Mao believed the 1st Marine Division had the highest combat effectiveness in the American Armed Forces. Peng’s Generals of the Ninth Army Group were given explicit orders to destroy
the 1st Marine Division.
As the 1st MarDiv fought its way from the Chosin Reservoir for 75 miles on a single lane road to the safe harbor of Hamhung it left in its wake a completely destroyed Chinese Ninth Army Group, 30,000 Chinese killed and 12,500 wounded, Marines of the 1st MarDiv demonstrated they can do the difficult immediately, the impossible took a little longer.
TALES FROM THE TUN - RECAP
The Tun Tavern crew convened at the Fire House restaurant in Palm Desert on February 27 for food, grog, camaraderie and sea stories. Dick Partee was called upon to give an impromptu presentation of his Marine development from Lieutenant to Colonel with a few comments about his high school football days when he was coached by the great Don Coryell.
Very nice surprise of the evening was Wes Ahlgen’s generous act of picking up the drink and dinner tab for all present.
The Tun Tavern group will meet again on April 10 at which time any member may be called upon by the chairman to share with us his Marine Corps experience. So be prepared.
UP NEXT: TUN TAVERN CLUB MEETINGS
TUN TAVERN GROUP MEETING
The Tun Tavern Club meets several times a year for dinner, fellowship, camaraderie, to swap sea stories and to pig out on food and grog. The few shekels accumulated by the club, if any, are turned over to the Chapter to use at its discretion. There are no club officers or rules or regulations guiding the demeanor of members and guests other than military courtesy extended to each other.
From time to time members may be tasked with sharing their military experiences with the members. Tun Tavern meetings are open to guests both military and civilian.
The next meeting of the Tun Tavern Club is April 10,
1700 hours at the Firehouse Grill, Palm Desert.
